2024 Holiday Season Wrap-up

A Message from the President:

As we come to the end of 2024, the Alumni Association can look back at another successful year. In June we awarded $31,250 in scholarship money to deserving seniors. This would not have been possible without the support of you, our members. Thank you.

The Hall of Fame Induction Dinner took place in September with alumni Carol Ann Tino Monaghan (’81), Donald Russak (’74), Joseph DeGennaro (’83), Anthony Grascia (’76) -posthumously, John Vaccaro (85), being honored along with Coach Adam Fennel. 2025 will see the Hall of Excellence Induction Dinner; nominations are now being accepted. Alumni Weekend activities will be held September 19-20, 2025.

Special Event:

The Alumni Association was incorporated as a New York State non-profit in 2000. To mark our 25th anniversary we are planning a gala fundraising event to be held at the Newington Cropsey Foundation. The date is November 8, 2025 so please mark your calendars and try to attend this very special event. More details will follow in the coming months.

The Board of Directors and I would like to wish you Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Prosperous 2025.

Hall of Excellence Nomination Forms Available:

Do you know someone in your class who has achieved success in their post high school lives?

Consider nominating them for the HHS Alumni Association Hall of Excellence. This Hall was created to recognize the achievements of HHS Alumni in the Arts, Sciences, Law, Medicine, Government, Religion, and Public Service. You can find a nomination form HERE. Nominations are due by February 1, 2025.

2025 Scholarship Fair and Donations:

On January 13, 2025 the HHS Alumni Association Board of Directors will be at the high school to educate the HHS graduating seniors about the scholarships we will be offering. It is one of our favorite events as we get to interact with the current students.

You can help! It is not too late to donate to our scholarship fund and take advantage of a 2024 tax benefit. Take a look at the list of scholarships we will be offering next year HERE, and if you’d like to contribute to any of them — click HERE. If you’d like to start a scholarship in memory of a teacher, classmate, or coach, please contact us at info@hohalumni.org We can work with you to make that happen.

Last year we awarded $31,250 in scholarships. It would be great if we could increase that award amount to at least, $35,000 in 2025. With your help, we can meet that goal!

A History of Hastings Baseball:

We received a VERY special gift this month. Dom Cecere, the current HHS Head Baseball Coach sent us an email stating that over the past three years, he compiled and updated records and articles about the school’s baseball record book and articles about the team going as far back as 1908. It’s a comprehensive archive and a bit of HHS history about the baseball program.

Thanks for this, Dom. What a great gift you have given us! No doubt all the former HHS baseball players will appreciate your work. Check it out, HERE.

We’re also looking to expand our recently established Athletics page on the website. With Dom’s work as our first post, we welcome any and all contributions to Hastings High School athletics history.

Just for Fun:

The transition from our warm NY autumn to the winter cold brings back a classmate’s memory of when girls were only allowed to wear pants to school when the temperature dipped below freezing. Or was it even colder than that? Pants could only be worn under skirts or jumpers on the way to and from school, or on specific days – like Girls Slacks Day.
